Bidding

Bidding at auction has never been easier, but however you choose to bid, you will need to register with us.

Of course, we would prefer to see you in the saleroom, however we know that this isn't always possible, so clients are also given the option to bid live online, leave an absentee bid, or book a telephone line for higher value lots. After registering, you may be asked to provide a copy of your photographic identification in order to complete the process.

If you are attending the sale in person, please go to our front desk and complete the relevant form(s) for registration, whereupon you will be issued with a paddle number for the sale.

Bidding in the saleroom

This way, you will experience the buzz, and atmosphere of bidding in a live auction. To bid in person just arrive in time to register. If you haven’t bid with us before you’ll need to bring some form of identification such as a driver’s licence or passport.

In order to place a bid, you need to raise your hand to show the auctioneer clearly that you are wishing to bid on the particular lot.  If successful, show the auctioneer your paddle with your bidder number at the end of the bidding for that particular lot.  The auctioneer will write your bidder number down to register you as the highest bidder.   If you have never bid before, we recommend coming a little earlier to the auction to watch how it works - it really is very simple!

Live Internet Bidding

Cheffins Live is our online bidding service which allows you to see and hear the auction in progress giving you a real time link into the saleroom direct from your computer or mobile device. All you have to do is click to bid wherever you are. Click here to register for live bidding.

Absentee or Commission Bids

These are the easiest way to participate if you cannot attend the auction or are not available to participate either online or on the telephone. An absentee or commission bid is simply your maximum bid, and the auctioneer will execute this for you, endeavouring to buy for as little as any other bids or reserves allow.  To leave a bid, register online here, alternatively download a form and return to us either via email or post.  It is also possible to leave a bid via telephone on +44 (0)1223 213 343.  All bids are confirmed via email where available.

Telephone Bidding

Bidding on the phone enables you to talk directly to a Cheffins member of staff in the auction itself who will relay progress back to you and, on your instruction, bid on your behalf. Please arrange a telephone line at least 24 hours before the sale, and bear in mind that booking a line commits you to bidding at least within estimate should the bidding reach that level. To organise a telephone bid download a form and return to us either via email or post or telephone us on +44 (0)1223 213 343.  We reserve the right to refuse this service for any bidder who, having booked a line, consistently does not place a bid.
