Description

A gypsy encampment beside a woodland track, possibly near Sheringham, Norfolkoil on panel57 x 77cmProvenance:Trustees of the Will of Arthur George, 3rd Earl of Onslow (1777-1870); W. G. Raphael (d. 1911) and by descent to the present owner of a Suffolk country houseFootnote: Literature:Peter Kennedy-Scott, A Romantic Look at Norwich School Landscapes: By a Handful of Great Little Masters, 1998, illus. p. 7Peter Kennedy-Scott (see Literature) refers to the present painting as a "Lane Scene near Sheringham" and dates it to circa 1820. The Norwich Castle Museum has records of two other paintings called Sheringham, which are vaguely similar in their composition and grouping of trees; however they are in fact imaginary and only loosely based on a real place. Condition report: Oil on a wooden panel with the woodgrain running horizontally. The panel is in a very good condition and the picture is in plane. The paint layer is stable and secure. Drying cracks have formed in the paint layer, this is caused as the oil paint contracts on drying. The cracks and areas of wear in the darker paint passages have been extensively overpainted. Although slightly mismatched to the original and glossy in areas, the overpaint is acceptable from a normal viewing distance. The varnish has degraded and become yellowed with age. The varnish has developed a network of age cracks and no longer adequately saturates the darker paint passages.
