About this lot

Description

An Extensive landscape with Venus and Cupid reclining in the foreground oil on canvas 49 x 69cm

Footnote: The figure group in the left foreground is not only by another hand from the landscape but appears to have been taken from another work and incorporated into the present one.

Condition report: The painting has been made from two separate sections of canvas. The figures in the lower left corner appear to have been cut out from a different painting and inserted into the landscape. In a raking light a join can be seen around the figures. The canvas weave in this area also has a slight diagonal orientation compared to the rest of the painting where the canvas weave is straight. To the right of the figures is a further diagonal line which may be a repair. The painting has been lined. There is wear and abrasion across the paint surface. There is extensive overpaint covering the wear. The varnish is clear and semi-matte. Mould has formed along the age cracks of the painting forming a white opaque haze. The carved wooden frame has localised areas of loss to the gilding.
