An early 20th century American silver sweetmeat dish, by the Gorham Manufacturing Company, 1923, of oval form with raised thumbpieces and elaborately pierced around a central monogrammed cartouche, with raised borders to a turned edge, stamped on the base 'Sterling 211A', 5.6ozt 23 x 14cm (9 x 5in)
The Gorham Manufacturing Company traces its roots back to Providence, Rhode Island in 1831 and its founder Jabez Gorham, a master craftsman, in partnership with Henry L. Webster. Gorham designed a number of elaborate trophies for sporting events, including the Borg-Warner Trophy for the Indianapolis 500, and the White House has used Gorham silver services during many administrations.
