Description

After Sir Peter Lely

Portrait of King Charles II (1630-1685) in armour, standing by a column
oil on canvas laid to board
24 x 20cm

Provenance:
Property of the late Michael Stennett, Suffolk

Footnote:

The present composition of King Charles II in armour is derived from a portrait type by Sir Peter Lely, datable to the mid-1670s, which is known from a mezzotint published by Alexander Browne (fl. 1660-1677) and a copy by Mary Beale, previously with Philip Mould.

Condition report:

44 x 32cm (framed)

Oil on canvas laid down on modern panel. Pinhole mark top centre. Paint layer appears slightly worn. Surface dirt. Surface scuffs around the edges.

Horizontal line above the sitter’s head presumably from a previous stretcher bar. There appears to be an old repaired diagonal tear left of the sitter’s head.
