Description

'La Colère' - An Allegorical study of anger signed with a monogram and dated "BB 1795" pencil, 27 x 20cm

Footnote: The present study is a copy after the original drawing by the painter and art theorist, Charles Le Brun. Le Brun was interested in the expression of emotions in painting, which were referred to as 'passions', drawing upon the theories of the philosopher, René Descartes (1596-1650). He closely studied and recorded the effect of different emotions on facial expressions, which were said to reveal the condition of one's soul. His treatise, Méthode pour apprendre à dessiner les passions (1698), was published posthumously and exerted a great influence on art theory over the next century.
