About this lot

Description

the thorax is set with an oval faceted peridot, abdomen set with marcasite, and the eyes are round faceted rubies, red, yellow and green plique-à-jour enamel wings, suspended from a belcher link chain with a central octagonal garnet, rectangular belcher link back chain, total length including chain 61cm, wing span 5.7cm, unhallmarked, stamped '925', weight 14.5g

Footnote: Plique-à-jour (French for 'letting in daylight') is a vitreous enamelling technique where the enamel is applied in cells without any backing so the light can shine through, giving a similar effect to that of a stained-glass window. It is very challenging technically and there is a high failure rate during production.
