Description

A pair of large 19th century Meissen ewers, emblematic of Water and Air, after J. J. Kändler,

water modelled with a scroll handle surmounted by a putto, the neck painted with dragonflies and other insects, the body moulded with a fleet of war ships between a figure of a mermaid and hippocampi with Neptune, the base with two dolphins among bulrushes; Air modelled with Juno seated in a cloud and Zephyr in flight below the blue scroll handle, the lower part moulded in low relief with a peacock and other birds, the ewer further applied with three putti, the foot with spiraling colored feathers, crossed swords marks in blue, 61cm high



Condition report:

Air - the leg is missing from the cherub at teh top, the cherub to the base is missing the left arm and part of the right hand. The cherub near the handle is missing the legs, crack to the cloud at the rear and chips to the toes of one cherub.

Water - Chip to the handle, chip to the horses ears and one horse has lost its ears, crack to the leg of one horse. losses to the fish and teh whole base has been cracked with subsequent losses.
