About this lot

Description

after a sandstone relief attributed to Desiderio da Settignano (Italian, circa.1429–1464), within an Arts & Crafts repoussé decorated copper frame 66 x 49cm

Footnote: Held in the Toldeo Museum of Art, Ohio, since 1938, the original sandstone relief, on which the present lot is based, was originally attributed to Donatello. Owing to an enthusiastic attempt to clean the work during the 19th century (resulting in the loss of many finely carved details), by the 20th century, popular scholarship deemed the work to be a 19th century immitation of 15th century Italian sculpture. More recently, the work has been attributed to Desuderio da Settignano, who was active in Florence during the 15th century.
