A belt plaque, Inner or Outer Mongolia, 2nd century BC-1st century AD, depicting two men wrestling, their horses behind them, 6 x 10cm In addition to the buyer's premium of 27% (22.5% + VAT) payable on the Hammer Price, this lot is also subject to import VAT at the reduced rate of 5%, payable on the Hammer Price. This indicates that the lot has been imported from outside the European Union.
Other Notes: Given that wrestling has always been a national sport for the peoples of northern China and beyond, it is possible that this plaque represents an episode of a heroic legend. Such plaques have been found only on Xiongnu sites and are typical of the Xiongnu aesthetic . Plaques with similar patterns can be found in museums such as the Ethnological Museum of Berlin, the Shanghai museum or the Institute of Archaeology in Ulan Bator.
