Carr' (lower left) oil on board 27 x 38cm (11 x 15in) Exhibited: London, The Leicester Galleries, 'Paintings and Drawings by Old Masters and Others, Recent Paintings by Thomas Carr, Paintings by Robert Buhler and Lawrence Gowing', March 1945 (label verso) Other Notes: Born in Belfast, Thomas Carr attended the Slade School of Fine Art in 1927 before travelling extensively around Europe and eventually settling in Newcastle, County Down. Carr was associated with the Euston Road School throughout the 1930s, and is primarily known for his paintings of domestic scenes and rural landscapes. Although he gained renown as a realist painter, Carr was included in the Objective Abstraction Exhibition held at the Zwemmer Gallery in 1935 and he exhibited regularly from the mid-1930s onwards at the Storran Gallery, the Leicester Galleries, the Redfern Gallery and Agnews. Large retrospectives of his work have been shown in Belfast and Dublin, and many works are now held as part of the permanent collection at the Tate Gallery.  There is evidence of cleaning and touching up in the sky towards the left-hand edge.
