Description

§ John Napper (British, 1916-2001) A plate of fish signed 'Napper' (lower right) oil on canvas 31 x 39cm (12 x 15in) Other Notes: John Napper trained at the Dundee School of Art and the Royal Academy School where he was taught by the portrait artist, Sir Gerald Kelly. He was sent as a war artist to Ceylon and east Africa during World War II and upon his return to England, taught life art at St Martin's School from 1949-57. Like his former teacher, Napper became a fashionable portrait painter and his picture of the Queen is in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. His last piece of work was a design fora large stained-glass window for the chapel at St James's Palace. The painting has been quite extensively cleaned, which has led to some areas of the original canvas weave showing through, particularly towards the bottom.
