Footnote: Provenance Sale; Christie's, London, 20 October 2005, lot 156 With John Davies Gallery, Stow-on-the-Wold, where acquired by the present owner in 2006 Private collection, Mallorca John Aldridge first visited the village of Deià, Mallorca, around 1933, the same year that he moved to Great Bardfield in rural Essex. He continued to visit Deià frequently for the rest of his life, often staying with the British poet and writer, Robert Graves, with whom he shared a close friendship. In addition to Aldridge, Graves’ Mallorcan residence hosted artists and poets including Jacob Bronowski, James Reeves and Norman Cameron. Today open to the public, Graves’ home in Deià, Ca n'Alluny, is home to a number of pictures by Aldridge.

Condition report: Oil on canvas. The canvas has adequate tension and the picture is in plane. The paint layers are in a good condition overall. There are some matte stains along the lower edge. The frame has some wear to the gilding surface.
