Description

Scène de rue, Marseille, circa 1921 signed 'Lagar' (lower right) oil on board (Dimensions: 72 x 53cm)

(72 x 53cm)

Footnote: Provenance With Crane Kalman Gallery, London Under the tutelage of Miguel Blay, Celso Lagar initially trained as a sculptor, before dedicating his career to painting. Favouring marginal figures of society over grand subjects, Lagar would often depict performers, including trapeze-artists, harlequins, dancers, and clowns. Many of Lagar’s figural works are imbued with both tragedy and tenderness. Le Guitariste , circa 1915 (lot 399), a pencil drawing which portrays a clown in profile, exhibits this quietly melancholic quality.

Condition report: Oil on mill board. The board is bowed forward but generally in sound condition. The paint layers are thinly applied and built up and in a stable condition. There is scratch in the upper left corner which has been filled and retouched. The surface coating is mottled and uneven with spots and stains. The gilded frame has a few chips and losses.
