A significant residential development opportunity in central Cambridge has come on the market with Cheffins and Savills on the site of an historic Cambridge company.

The Swiss Laundry site, on the Cherry Hinton Road, extends to 0.74 hectares (1.84 acres) and was allocated for residential development in the Council’s Local Plan in 2014, subject to the Swiss Laundry finding alternative premises.

Swiss Laundry is a successful, family-owned company which has traded in Cambridge for over 115 years. The ‘Swiss’ has just opened a new state of the art 37,000 sq. ft. laundry at the Papworth Business Park which will allow capacity to be doubled.

Cheffins and Savills are inviting unconditional offers by 12 noon on Friday 21 June 2019.

Edward Dodson, Director of Commercial at Cheffins, said:

“This is an excellent, and very rare, brownfield redevelopment opportunity in Central Cambridge and we are delighted to be offering it alongside Savills.

“The land was identified for residential development in the council’s local plan back in 2014 and this is a prime location close to the heart of our thriving city.”

Richard Janes, Director of Development at Savills Cambridge, said:

“Despite the current political and economic uncertainty the development land market in Cambridge and the wider East of England remains robust – with strong demand among housebuilders and developers for consented land in the right location.

“This particular site is well located and in partnership with Cheffins we’re excited about taking it to the market. There is a clear need for new housing in Cambridge and we expect there to be significant interest.”

Mark Turvill, managing director of Swiss Laundry, said:

“We are very excited about the opening of our new laundry in Papworth, which follows on from the successful relocation of our Norfolk factory within Great Yarmouth. Modern energy efficient equipment, coupled with considerable automation and new technology, will help service the growing needs of the hospitality market in Cambridge and surrounding area. We will continue to deliver a valued service to our local loyal customer base.”
