Ellutia Chooses Lancaster Way Business Park in Ely for New HQ

In May, Cambridge success story Ellutia UK celebrated the start of works on a brand new HQ at Lancaster Way Business Park, Ely, which will combine office, laboratory and production space in a 15,000 sq ft building. Ellutia is the brainchild of Phillip James, the founder of Cambridge Scientific Instruments, and is now a world leader in the design and production of innovative and unique gas chromatography instruments.

Ellutia builds instruments and devises tailored solutions for government laboratories and clients from a huge range of sectors globally – notably the food sector, agrochemicals and forensics.

Based currently in a building at Witchford, Ellutia has outgrown that space and when the senior management team were considering a move, Lancaster Way was a clear favourite. Avril House, Sales Director at Ellutia, explains:

“Although we are very much a part of the network of R&D companies in the Cambridge area, as we’ve always been based outside the city, we’ve enjoyed the benefits of travel without congestion, plus a lower cost of living for our staff. Our talented people are our key consideration, so a relocation to Lancaster Way was a perfect fit.”

“We’re really looking forward to a new prestigious, purpose-built HQ which will enhance our reputation and give us room for planned growth. There is also room for further growth on site and we expect to increase staff levels by about 40% over the next two years.”

To manage the pressure for space on a short-term basis, Ellutia has also taken a brand new unit at Merlin Court, the range of smaller industrial units recently completed at Lancaster Way.

“The high quality environment, combined with essential services such as the 24-hour security and fibre optic broadband are a real bonus for Ellutia,” adds Philip Woolner, Director of Commercial at Cheffins. “Lancaster Way benefits from being one of few business parks in the region with around 90 acres of land available for B1, B2 and B8 development in an already mature and attractive business park – and at around half the cost of a comparable build in Cambridge.”

Lancaster Way is a key business park in the Cambridge Compass Enterprise Zone, a network of sites that offer attractive benefits for businesses.

Neil Darwin, Chief Executive of the Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough LEP, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Ellutia as the first new tenant to the Cambridge Compass Enterprise Zone at Lancaster Way. Ellutia is a growing and innovative business, who clearly saw the benefits of locating their new HQ within the Cambridge Compass, with its easy access to our local, highly skilled workforce. With up to 100% business rates discounts on offer to companies moving onto site, we look forward to welcoming even more new businesses to the Cambridge Compass Enterprise Zone in the near future.”

MP for South East Cambridgeshire, Lucy Frazer QC, was also on site to join the celebrations. She said: "I was delighted to meet the team at Ellutia and to see work start on their new building. It is a sign of the prosperity of the region that good businesses are continuing to grow and develop."
