The sale kicked off at 10.30am sharp with a huge crowd assembled around lot 1 and Bill King took the gavel for the first stint and things got underway with top lots being a Perkins diesel engine at £260, unused John Deere 1360 mower bed topping £2,000, New Holland front mudguards at £210 and some spirited bidding was seen on a quantity of John Deere mower spares knocking down at an impressive £400. Trade continued to be strong and there was plenty of bidding from both our regular buyers and from some new faces.
It was then the turn of Oliver Godfrey to take over the clipboard with highlights being a quantity of Claas 690 cutting blades selling for £360, selection of Claas forage harvester spares at £300, an unused Claas 860 chute assembly knocking down for £700 and a pallet of Ford spares topped £240. It was then onto to an impressive line-up of wheels and tyres with some of the highlights being a pair of 1300x530-533 at £550, a pair of 14.9 R28’s hit £600 and a pair of 800/65 R32 Michelins knocked down at £2,100. Good trade continued with a pair of 18.4 R38’s selling at £1,900, pair 14.9 R38 Michelins at £1,200 and a much sought after pair of 710/70 R38 wheels and tyres with John Deere centres finally knocked down for a whopping £2,900.
With the wheels and tyres under the hammer the crowd moved out onto the sale field for the exciting line-up of implements and machinery. With superb trade across the board the top lots went to a super sharp 2002 Kuhn 121 5furrow plough selling at £5,400, Hesston bale grab at £1,600, 1997 Garford Victor 4row sugar beet harvester surprised at £4,100 and a recently refurbished set of 6m Markstig Concorde rolls sold well at £3,500. Muck and slurry spreader trade was buoyant with a 1999 Hi-Spec 2000 selling for £3,250, an ECE Lowline 1200 attracting £5,000, a 1997 Lowline 900 topped £3,900 and a smart West Dual Spreader 2000 attracted some strong bidding at £4,100. With a crowd of determined bidders and momentum gathering the totals began to rise with a 2004 Standen Powervator triple bed tiller knocking down for £7,000 and a trio of 2002 Bailey 14tonne silage trailers smashed £9,900 a piece, trailer trade was red hot with a 2001 Ken Wootton 12tonne selling well at £6,000.
It was then the return of Bill King to keep things rolling with the grassland kit and a set of 2006 Krone Easy Cut triple mowers fetched £8,200, a 2005 non conditioner set made £6,000, a 2004 Claas rear mower hit £4,100 and the front mower touched £2,550. With bidders keen to snap up the quality kit on offer a 2006 Claas Volto 1050 rake sold well at £2,800, a 2007 Claas Volto 1320T tedder hit £8,000, a pair of 2008 and 2009 Claas Liner 2900 rakes to £8,000 and £9,000 respectively. To end the machinery section was an extra lot a 2006 McHale 998 trailed bale wrapper topping £14,000.
With a fine selection of green machines on offer there was much anticipation for the 8 gleaming Fendts on display. This converted into 100% of them finding new homes! Some of the top prices were a 2008 818 with 3,500 hours on the clock selling well at £47,000, another 2008 818 with just under 4,300 hours at £45,000, and another with 4,200 hours hit £44,500 finally a super 2008 Fendt 927 with just under 4,400 hours smashed £66,500.
Plant trade was very strong with the two excavators a Samsung and Komatsu selling for £8,000 and £9,500 respectfully. The uncommon Hydrema 806’s topped £8,000 and £7,500, the Grove 18tonne mobile crane hit £6,000 and the DAF mobile mill mix wagon surprised all at £8,200. The option was offered on the three 2002 John Deere 3400’s and all made £13,000, an extra lot in the form of a 2002 Manitou MLA620 knocked down at £14,000. There was huge pre-sale interest in the JCB loading shovels and this translated into some top prices on the day with a 2007 JCB 416S Agri hitting £59,500 and an included lot in the form of another 2007 416S Agri at a cool £50,000.
It was then time for the forager harvesters and with nine to choose from made for an impressive spectacle on the sale field. All had been subject to Wilson Farming’s strict in-house servicing schedule and were all harvest ready. Just shy of 80% found new homes with end users dominating the trade. Up first was the 2003 Claas Jaguar 870 4wd at £52,000, then three 2004 850’s at £50,000 a piece, a 2004 890 at £58,500 and two round backed 2005 850 and 870 made £66,000 and £62,500 a piece.
In conclusion an excellent sale with some outstanding prices, a huge crowd in attendance, a very pleased vendor and also another record for boys in the green fleeces. Coupled with our recording breaking sale on Monday 7th February at our world famous Cambridge Machinery Sale, Cheffins has shifted well in excess of £5,000,000 worth of agricultural machinery in a week! Thursday 10th February saw already probably the largest agricultural on-site auction sale of 2011. The sale was conducted on behalf of Wilson Farming who have an impressive reputation for industry leaders in agricultural contracting and machinery hire, with Harry Wilson winning Farmers Weekly ‘Contractor of the Year 2010’.
