Cheffins Auctioneers sold a collection of vintage machinery and rural and domestic bygones on behalf of the Barker Family in Westhorpe near Stowmarket on Saturday 17th June. The Barker Collection comprised over 500 lots of collector's items and drew a sizeable crowd from across the county.
The star lot of the day was Lot 761 - a Howard Platypus 30 4-cyclinder diesel Crawler Tractor which made a healthy £7,500. Lot 749 - a Fordson Standard N 4-cylinder petrol/paraffin Tractor fitted with a 1942 Howard MK1 Trencher, Rotoped tracks and sold steel front wheels made £7,000, a figure believed to be a record for this type of tractor.
Other notable lots on a hot and humid afternoon included Lot 764, a Ford 5000 (pre-Force) diesel tractor which made £2,500 with Lot 768 - a 1979 1600cc Ford Transit dropside truck fetching £2,700.
The collection was amassed by the late Eric Barker and began in the 1950s, growing throughout the following decades as Mr Barker collected over 60 vintage tractors; 40 lawnmowers; binders; horse equipment; wagons; carts and other implements. There was also a wide array of rural and domestic bygones including dairy equipment; early washing machines; vacuum cleaners; typewriters and sewing machines.
Mr Barker spent much of his time exhibiting the collection at shows, rallies and farming demonstrations. In 1978 he had a dedicated marquee at the Suffolk Show which was visited by the Queen Mother.
William King, Director and Auctioneer at Cheffins comments: “The Barker Collection is one of the most comprehensive assortments of rural and domestic bygones that have come to the market and we were honoured to have auctioneered this collection on behalf of the family. The sale was well attended and the collection, although now dispersed, will be preserved for future generations.”
