Since this time Harold has concentrated his time and effort on the maintenance of his engine and has extensively rallied the engine which has meant that his excellent collection of locally sourced and original tractors were kept in storage at Green Lane Farm. So it was, that Cheffins were instructed to offer for sale Harold’s tractors to include an excellent selection of stationary engines.
Despite several short sharp showers an excellent crowd appeared to support Harold with a good number of local farmers and enthusiasts in attendance who were clearly looking to snap up the tractors which had good local provenance.
The early part of the sale consisted of spares which were quickly despatched to a hungry crowd of buyers. The excellent selection of stationary engines had drawn many collectors who were intrigued by the very unusual and rare Eagle stationary engine which had been manufactured in the neighbouring county of Warwick. This unrestored 4hp horizontal open crank engine was eventually sold for £1,650. The ever popular Amanco engine in the sale fetched £520 with a Bamfords SD3 6hp vertical at £400 and a Petter ‘Apple Top’ also at £400.
The very original and straight tractors on offer were also very well recieved with a top price of £9,600 for a Field Marshall Series III. Other prices included: Ferguson TEF 20 at £2,175, a Massey Harris 102 Junior at £3,000, a John Deere D at £3,700, a International W4 at £2,700 and an excellent International B414 at £2,650. The Fordson N had recieved much attention in the lead up to the sale particularly since it carried unusual 16” Barker cast front wheels, another local tractor, it was eventually knocked down at £2,700 to the original owners son from a neighbouring village to much excitement.
A full list of tractor prices are set out below.
The sale also included 4 tractors from the estate of well known local enthusiast Geoff Edwards with a 1951 Field Marshall Series III sold post sale for £11,500 and a nicely presented BMB President at £1,100 amoungst others.
In conclusion an excellent sale and it is worth emphasising that the market for good original tractors remain unbated.
Cheffins next Vintage Sale is on 23rd July 2011.

Steam overtakes diesel as Harold sells up
We were delighted to renew our acquaintance with Harold Hodgkins when we travelled to Coton Clanford near Stafford. Thirteen years previously at one of our regular Chilford Hall Vintage sales Harold and his wife had attended the sale and successfully bid for the foster steam traction engine ‘Sir William’. Owning a steam engine had been a lifelong ambition for Harold and it was a case of taking the opportunity.Since this time Harold has concentrated his time and effort on the maintenance of his engine and has extensively rallied the engine which has meant that his excellent collection of locally sourced and original tractors were kept in storage at Green Lane Farm. So it was, that Cheffins were instructed to offer for sale Harold’s tractors to include an excellent selection of stationary engines.
