Seago at Auction

Seago at Auction

A wonderful portrait of Seago’s mother by the artist will be coming up for auction at Cheffins Auctioneers in Cambridge in their June Fine Art sale.

Edward Seago (1910-1974), the son of a Norwich coal merchant, spent most of his working life in Norfolk from where he drew his inspiration for his popular paintings. His mother was an amateur watercolourist who encouraged him to paint and at the age of 14 he won an award from the Royal Drawing Society. At 18 he decided to tour with the circus throughout Europe.

Amongst his most loyal fans was Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother who loved his work so much that eventually Seago donated her two paintings a year, one for her birthday and one for Christmas!

To our knowledge this is the only portrait of Seago’s mother, indeed he did not seem to enjoy painting portraits, especially women and to one he complained, 'If I have to do portraits, I prefer to paint men. They have better bone structure and the head gives far more scope, in terms of colouring and skin tones...' Nevertheless this sensitive and most attractive painting promises to attract much attention from both private and trade buyers at the auction.
