A great year for Vintage, Collectives and Onsite sales

By Oliver Godfrey BSc(Hons) MRICS

It’s been another bumper year for onsite and collective auction sales in 2010, with over 12 onsite and 5 collective auctions; reports Cheffins’ auctioneer Oliver Godfrey BSc (Hons) MRICS. During the course of the year we have conducted auctions from Stranraer in Scotland to Bradworthy in Devon, but ended the year closer to home.

Records Tumble in Kent

On Saturday 18th September we conducted an onsite auction sale for a tractor dealer in Kent, who had accumulated (rather subconsciously) a collection of over 70 vintage and classic tractors.

Top lots on the day included a 1988 Massey Ferguson 360, which after some spirited bidding knocked down at a record breaking hammer price of £20,800. When you realise that this tractor had only recorded 683 hours from new and was in ‘box fresh’ condition it goes some way to explaining the astronomical price. As a matter of interest the tractor, new some 22 years ago, would have been around £11,000-£12,000!

Other record breakers on the day included a 1992 Ford 3930 (317 hours) at £14,400, 1978 Massey Ferguson 135 (1,035 hours) at £14,200, David Brown 995 (1,192 hours) at £10,800 and a very original Fordson Power Major with Roadless DG half tracks at a resounding £11,400.

Top Tattie Trade

Tuesday 5th October saw the auction team head to Hertfordshire for an onsite farm auction of tractors, plant, machinery, potato growing and grading equipment. On offer was an excellent selection of grading equipment highlighted by a 2001 Downs Proteus 7ft grader at £23,000 and a Downs Moonraker elevator at £5,600. Potato box trade was exceptional and with over 1,500 boxes for sale there was plenty to satisfy demand, with buyers from the UK, Europe and Ireland. Top price was £43 per box for the 11 year old boxes and an average price of £38 per box.

Tractor trade was brisk and encouragingly dominated by the farmer buyer. Top price went to a very straight 1995 John Deere 8400 with 5,906 hours on the clock and exceeded all expectations, all the way to £28,800. Other prices included a 1997 John Deere 6800 at £12,000, 1997 Clayton C4120 sprayer at £19,000, 2000 Komatsu PL130 excavator at £17,000 and a 2001 Volvo EC70 midi-digger at £14,800.

Super Stars at Sutton

There was a star line up for our autumn collective Cambridge Vintage Sale at Sutton near Ely on Saturday 16th October. The sale was dominated by the impressive line up of steam engines from the John H Ullmann (deceased) collection. Top prices included a cool £128,000 for a 1931 Garrett traction engine ‘Rob Roy’, £98,000 for a Foden 5ton steam wagon and another £98,000 for a 1931 Sentinel DG4 steam tractor.

With over 270 vintage and classic tractors on offer, an impressive 70% found new homes on the day. Top prices were £33,500 for a 1915 Overtime Model R, £19,000 for an uncommon 1983 Jewelltrac 116, £16,750 for a 1958 Massey Ferguson 65 4wd, £16,500 for a shiny 1949 Field Marshall S.III, an impressive £16,200 for a 1969 Roadless Ploughmaster 6/4 and a jaw dropping £13,000 for a 1,000 houred 1975 Massey Ferguson 148 Multi-Power.

The final onsite sale of the year was as close to home as we have been all year when we conducted a dispersal sale of farm machinery and equipment on behalf of M & A Levitt at Field View Farm, Chittering following the sale of the farm. Top price of the day was for a 2000 MF 6270 which fetched £17,000. A huge crowd was in attendance which ensured excellent trade throughout.

Another busy auction campaign ends, which makes for some interesting reading and confirms Cheffins dominance in the sale of modern and vintage machinery and equipment. We now look forward to a busy start to 2011 which sees Cheffins onsite sales team travelling to Shropshire and Devon.
