MOTORCYCLES
With a spectacular 92% sold, the section was clearly popular with buyers and the viewing day was as crowded as the sale day itself. Leading the way was the 1935 BSA J12 which saw international interest before selling to an East Anglian buyer for an estimate busting £18,200 whilst the 1911 AC Sociable was taken by a Dutch buyer for £15,800. The Military Harley Davidson went to a Guernsey buyer for a respectable £8,050.

This section was graced with some very fine models and some deserved high prices. The awe inspiring 3 inch Burrell Scenic took top price at £19,000 closely followed by a fine 4 inch scale Burrell traction engine at £14,000 whilst a 1.5 inch example by Bassett-Lowke achieved £3,000
LITERATURE
An Austin Tractor sales brochure c1922 took a huge £600 bid to secure and a fine collection of steam engine colour slides went even further to £1,000, original steam engine catalogues were plentiful in the £100-£200 range. Vehicle literature saw a Bentley Speed Six handbook with others sell at £550 and Rolls-Royce 40/50HP handbooks took £170
AUTOMOBILIA
A Bedford truck enamel sign shone out at £500 and a pre-war BP petrol pump globe was close behind at £460, an ever popular section with a wide variety of lots that saw a good collection of car badges and clocks sell out with prices between £100 and £200, there is a strong market still for those early motoring items.
STEAM SPARES
This section was a near sell out with strong prices paid throughout especially all things Burrell, a steering wheel at £960 was quickly trumped by a works plate for engine No. 3843 at £1,000. A pair of Eli Griffiths lamps made £800 and a Fowler whistle sang out loudly at £620
STATIONARY ENGINES & HORTICULTURAL EQUIPMENT
Top lots in the stationary engine and horticultural section went to Sattley 1.5hp o/c engine at £500, an eagerly anticipated Petter Hanyman 8bhp sideshaft stationary engine sold at a huge £3,700, a very nice 1926 Bamford 3hp o/c stationary engine topped £720 and a stationary steam engine surprised at a vendor pleasing £1,500. A large McLaren 6ton generator knocked down at £1,500 and an ex-Hull Harbour Dredger steam engine hit £900. The real surprise in the horticultural section went to lot 1910 A vintage compact tractor with a rotovator, reversible plough, cultivator and potato planter made almost five times the reserve and sold at £1,400.
TRACTOR SPARES, WHEELS & TYRES
Kicked off a 9am this sale was heaving with potential purchasers desperate to get their hands on the 600 lots of tractor spares. Prices of note went to Leyland 384 fenders at a whopping £700, a pair of Massey Ferguson 135 11x28 pavt wheels and tyres at £720, Fordson nose cone trade was buoyant still with a super straight example selling at £720 and a pair of Major wings in similar fettle topped a staggering £940! A set of Fordson Major wheel weights sold well at £480, a Perkins L4 front casting for an E27N sold £500 and a pair of Leyland tractor wings knocked down at £400. Good trade continued with a Fordson (Irish) fuel tank selling at £390, a pair of IH 414 wings hit £320 and a Turner Yeoman Contractor gearbox and back axle knocked down at £520 and a Massey Ferguson seat sold at £400. A huge clearance rate and be sure to get your entries in early for July!

This sale got of to a flier with plough trade dominating the selling. A Ransomes FR 2furrow hit £620, a complete Ferguson 2furrow sold at £420, a very original Doe single leg subsioler topped £700 and very tidy 2furrow ride-on plough surprised all at £1,300. Trade carried on with a Ransomes PSF391 3furrow trailed plough selling well at £800, another Ransomes plough a RSLD topped £550 and a TS54 hit £720. Ransomes was the make of the day with a TS46 knocking down at £850 and a lovely straight John Deere trailed disc plough sold for £950, a vintage mole plough topped £500, a Ferguson potato ridger fetched £400 and a Ferguson ridge roll sold well at £540. A Ransomes single leg trailed subsoiler hit £1,400, while the trailer section saw some spirited bidding with a Ferguson 30cwt trailer knocking down at £1,900 and a Wheatley trailer topped £320.
COMMERCIALS, STEAM ENGINES & TRACTORS
This sale saw a bulging entry of over 350 tractors, 9 steam engines and 20 vehicles. The sale started with a bang with all but one of the vehicles selling and highlights include a stunning 1968 Morris 1000 pick up selling at £7,300, a same vintage Lotus Cortina Mk2 hit £5,600, a 1961 7.5t Thames Trader sold at £5,600 and a very early 1955 Mercedes Benz Unimog hit £4,800. With 9 steam engines on show it made for an awesome site, many found new homes with the 1897 Marshall traction engine ‘Laura’ hitting £52,000, a 1929 Aveling & Porter steam tractor ‘Princess Anne’ topped £39,500, the very interesting 1905 Robey 3hp portable with the Hayes Windlass ploughing tackle sold post sale for £29,000. Not done there the RSJ 2-3hp portable surprised at £11,800, top lot of the day was the 1912 Burrell steam engine which sold for a tremendous £115,000, a little bit different but still received a lot of interest was the Case 65 ‘Lumberjack’ selling well at £30,000. There was a fine complement of steam accessories with a Burrell mill selling at £2,500, a Fowler anti-balance plough hit £5,000, a beautiful Swift showmans living wagon topped £7,000 and the Alan livening van took £5,500.
With so much steam the tractors were resigned to almost halfway down the second row but this did not affect their value with a 1936 Ferguson Brown Type A hitting £15,200, a 1947 Field Marshall S.II Contractors topped £12,200, the much anticipated Bates Steel Mule Model D took £18,500. The 1917 Overtime Model R was well received a took £42,000, while top tractor price of the day went to a superb 1920 Saubderson Model G at £53,500 and an equally desirable Marshall 12/20 with VAT on the hammer price took £19,250. Other highlights include a 1954 Lanz Bulldog D9506 at £24,500, a very original 1969 Massey Ferguson 178 4wd took £12,200 and another red machine in the form of a 165 Hi-Hi fetched £11,000. A colossal £10,800 was paid for half a Doe Triple D Sn.322 and a new UK record was set when £14,500 was paid for a 1978 Massey Ferguson 135 with Multi-Power and only 2,174 hours. Restored tractors made top money with a 1958 Fordson Dexta hitting the heights of £7,200, a 1974 Ford 5000 at £11,000, a 1972 County 4000-Four took £12,000, a Roadless Ploughmaster 90 realised £9,800 and a super 1968 Fordson Dexta c/w a Ransomes Robin 2furrow plough took £5,900. In conclusion prices seem to be holding well with trade returning for Field Marshall’s and Lanz Bulldogs while original low houred examples and restored tractors set new records. In all 70% of the massive entry of tractors sold, resulting in an excellent days selling and some very pleased vendors all round.

Cheffins inaugural Vintage sale of 2011 saw buyers arrive by land, sea and air as well as on the ether with the advent of i-bidder live on-line bidding. The economic doom mongers were, once again, fed humble pie as the appetite of hardened collectors of all things vintage proved to be as sharp as ever with prices appearing unabated and, in many cases exceeding expectations.MOTORCYCLES
