Wednesday 24th & Thursday 25th November 2010

West Acre High House – Norfolk Woodside - Suffolk

Woodside in Ipswich is an imposing listed mansion built at probably the highest point in the town.
The house was originally by the Ipswich businessman, J Limmer in 1872, it was then bought by the Paul family, an important Ipswich and Suffolk landowning family in 1925. Their family business of malting and milling was founded by Robert Paul in 1842, the Paul family previously owned a small brewery in Foundation Street, Ipswich.
The family were great collectors, with a particular love of local painters including the well respected Leonard Squirrell, and it is these paintings, amongst other paintings, silkworks, furniture and collectors items, which will be included in the sale.

Another fine property is West Acre High House. The recent sale of West Acre High House in Norfolk brought to an end the Birkbeck family's occupancy. The C18th Birkbeck family were wool staplers, general merchants and bankers, who came to Lynn Regis (now Kings Lynn) in Norfolk, and were based at Gurneys and Birkbeck bank in 1781, branches of which are now under the Barclays banner. Under the Birkbecks, the estate has seen considerable field sporting activity of hunting, fishing and shooting.
The sale will include items from the house including a painting of Henry VIII (1491-1547), manner of Hans Holbein the Younger, est: £15,000-20,000., A Chestnut Hunter at Westacre High House,
est: £300-500. A George II mahogany wine cistern. £7,000-10,000.
