Europes earliest Road Atlas makes £10,000
Cheffins Book sale saw some great prices realised with maps and atlases leading the way. After much regional, national and international press there was great interest in the Britannia Atlas by John Ogilby, dated 1675. It was the first national road atlas of any country in Europe and the first to be prepared on a uniform scale of one inch to one mile. The importance of the lot was evident in the interest and the bidders did not disappoint when they flocked to the saleroom and bid the price up to £10,000.
