World Record for German Expressionist
A world record price was achieved at Cheffins Pictures & C20th Art sale when a painting by Gert Heinrich Wollheim (1894-1974) made £13,000.
Wollheim was born in Dresden in 1894. He went to Dusseldorf at the end of 1919 and became one of the founding members of the ‘Young Rhineland’ group, which also included Max Ernst and Otto Dix. Immediately after Hitler seized power in Germany in 1933 his works were declared degenerate art and many were destroyed. Wollheim then fled to France and became active in the Resistance.
The painting full of activity and intrique, has spent the last 30 years in its owner’s attic - ‘An Allegory with Vice as a Clown playing cards with Ignorance, who is holding an Ace, and Old Age, Vanity looking in a Mirror, and holding an Apple, an Admirer Kissing her Foot, and a Parrot’, finally the painting has once again come to life.
Our next Fine Art Sale will be held on 26th & 27th November 2008
