Auction of items from Sir Christopher Wren’s Winslow Hall
Cheffins Auctioneers are proud to announce our Spring Fine Art sale which will include items from several fine country houses, to include Winslow Hall, Buckinghamshire, purchased by Sir Edward and Lady Tomkins in 1959. This magnificent house, believed to be the work of one of England’s greatest architects, Sir Christopher Wren was originally built in 1700 for William Lowndes, Secretary to the Treasury from 1695 for 30 years. At a cost of £6,585, supervised by the master carpenter Matthew Banckes, the house used 111 oak trees in its construction, and is recognised as one of the finest late C17th houses in England.
With the death two years ago of Sir Edward Tomkins, the family decided to give up the house which accounts for these items coming up for sale. The sale will include furniture, distinctive 1930’s glass lamps, the collection of oriental works of art and many excellent rugs. The collection is a true reflection of a beautiful and historic house.
Amongst many wonderful lots the sale will include a set of twelve faux bamboo painted chairs. The chairs will have an estimate of £5,000-8,000 and a pair of carved wood guard dogs, estimate £1,000-1,500.
