Furniture and effects once owned by Agatha Christie, from her London mews house she shared with her husband Sir Max Mallowan, will be sold in Cambridge at Cheffins Auctioneers in the 25th & 26th March 2009 Fine Art sale. Amongst these wonderful pieces will include Agatha’s black lacquer breakfast table, a writing desk , chairs, armchairs, lacquer pictures and address book from 22 Cresswell Place, Kensington.

Agatha married the archaeologist Sir Max Mallowan in 1930 and her travels with Mallowan over the next thirty years greatly influenced many of her novels, such as Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile.

With many a keen buyer hoping to own part of this best selling English writer of all time, named by the Guinness Book of Records as the ‘best selling writer of any kind, along with William Shakespeare…’ where ‘only the bible is know to have outsold her collected sales of roughly four billion copies of novels., this sale promises to excite.

London, no doubt, hugely influenced many of Agatha’s books and much of her writing was done in London whilst she used Devon as her country retreat, which fans have just had the chance to enjoy as the National Trust opened Greenway, Agatha’s Devonshire house. Some of the lots to be auctioned from her London home will include Agatha’s writing desk, a William IV library table, wonderful group of Agatha’s desk blotter and address book, and a copy of ‘The Golden Fleece’ by Robert Graves, signed inside to ‘Agatha and Max, love from Robert 1944’. This book also contains a wonderful letter to Agatha & Max from Robert in Mallorca in 1946 in which he says ‘How nice to send us your blood! Blood donor Agatha! We had already ordered a copy…’ perhaps Agatha had cut her finger and a drop of blood stained her letter accompanying possibly ‘The Hollow’ published in 1946!

This chance to own objects from the life of Agatha Christie is an opportunity that will excite and inspire many and is indeed attracting much attention.
