It was Henry Joshua Cheffins (1846-1922) who was the founder of the ‘modern’ Cheffins. At that time, the business’s only branch was in Saffron Walden in Essex. and was known as ‘Mr Cheffins’ until he died, becoming ‘Messrs Cheffins’ afterwards.
In those early days, the firm was a leading auctioneer and property agent, involved principally in livestock markets and estate sales. Long before supermarkets appeared, livestock markets operated in all the key towns until the 1980s.
The firm has grown and diversified as the local economy progressed. It has merged and absorbed a number of local firms, in Saffron Walden, Cambridge and Ely, to establish itself as one of the leading firms of professional surveyors in the region, with a national reputation. Long established auctioneering and property agent names such as Rand, Thurgood, Grain, Chalk, Long, Wisbey, Comins and Catlings have become part of the modern-day Cheffins.
Changes in farming activity led the firm into such major developments as vintage and machinery sales which now have an international market, with buyers from more than 100 countries regularly bidding at the monthly machinery sale.
Subsequently, Cheffins expanded its residential agency and added a Fine Arts department.
The firm has offices in Cambridge, Ely, Haverhill, Newmarket and Saffron Walden, and its machinery salesground at Sutton, near Ely.
Chairman Bill King says: “Cheffins has a very strong sense of continuity and the present generation of partners wants to celebrate our history and the traditions of the firm for professional service over such a long period.”
A special part of the Cheffins’ website will be devoted to the firm’s history.
