Art and Design from 1860

Dale Chihuly glass Persian series sculpture comes to auction

The Art & Design from 1860 auction to be held on Thursday 6th October will include the handblown blue glass form with yellow rim, entitled Paradise Persian, 2003  by the American glass sculptor Dale Chihuly (American, b.1941). Since dislocating his shoulder in 1979 he has no longer been able to hold the glass blowing pipe, but has now hired others to do this job, presently describing himself as ‘more director than actor’. This Persian Series provided a way to express the motion and fluidity of liquid glass with the Paradise Persian a Studio Edition from the early 2000’s.  This lot will have an estimate of £1,500-2,500.

Amongst other items of interest  in this sale of just over 500 lots, includes a ladies Gucci bicycle. The bicycle has a bronze metal frame with chocolate leather seat , seat packs and panniers and will have an estimate of £1,000,2,000. A pair of matchstick heads by David Mach (Scottish b.1956) in neon pink and green will have an estimate of £1,000-1,500. Another highlight is lot 72, a Lucie Rie (Austrian/British 1902-1995) fine porcelain vase with flared rim.  Lucie Rie was undoubtedly one of the leading ceramists of the 20th Century, who moved to London before the outbreak of the second world war. She was never interested in the mere ornamentation but in the balance and synthesis of the form. This piece was bought by the vendor’s mother directly from Lucie Rie at Albion Mews in the early 1980’s.  A pair of The Maharajah of Baroda (Indian 1938-2012) Baroda Goats, painted carved wood will attract many admirers. His Highness the Maharajah Ranjitsingh Gaekwad of Baroda, born in 1938 studied Fine Art at the University of Baroda and then at the Royal Academy Schools in London. The goats will have an estimate of £3,000-4,000 each.
